An Atlanta woman, aged 66, lost her life in a tragic stabbing on a MARTA train. Authorities described the attack as random and without provocation. The victim, named Margaret Swan by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office, was attacked during a train journey between the Lakewood-Fort McPherson and Oakland City stations.
MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher characterized this incident as a senseless act of violence. MARTA expressed condolences to the victim’s family and witnesses in their official statement.
Details of the Attack
The suspect, John Elijah Matthews, 25, faces a charge of murder malice connected to the incident. According to the information shared with FOX 5 Atlanta, Matthews allegedly approached Swan on the train shortly after taking his seat next to her. The attack unfolded as Matthews, only seconds after standing beside Swan, reportedly took out a knife and inflicted a fatal wound to her neck. Swan was reportedly stabbed between 18 to 20 times.
Surveillance footage from the train revealed the unprovoked nature of the attack. Witnesses noted that Swan cried for help amid the assault. Matthews was seen on camera pushing Swan to the floor and remaining near her until the train reached the Oakland City Station.
Police Response and Arrest
Upon arrival at the station, Matthews exited the train still armed with the knife. MARTA police officers responded swiftly, arresting him on the platform. Despite the immediate intervention by emergency medical personnel, Swan succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
This fatal attack was reported at approximately 1:29 p.m. at the Georgia State MARTA station.
