Tragic Shooting at Bakersfield High School Football Game

Tragic Incident at Independence High School

Independence High School’s anticipated football season opener against rival Centennial High turned tragic. A shooting claimed the life of 17-year-old Levi Brown, a student-athlete from Independence High, inside the stadium gates. The Bakersfield police confirmed the incident.

Levi Brown’s Background

Levi Brown played football for Independence High. His coach, Vince Carter, expressed sorrow on Facebook. Carter noted that Brown was misled by the wrong crowd. He stated, “it hurts to see this is how it ended.” It remains unconfirmed whether Brown was part of the junior varsity or varsity team.

Details of the Shooting

The chaos began around 8 p.m., as the varsity team took the field. An argument led to gunfire, resulting in panic. KBAK/KBFX video showed people, including players, fleeing the area. Officers transported Brown to Kern Medical, where he was declared dead.

Community Concerns and Police Response

Bakersfield Police Officer Eric Celedon stated this was an isolated incident and school games are generally safe. Nevertheless, the event has left the community unsettled.

“As a father who worked for the Kern high school district as a security guard, the district and the high school need a plan to prevent this again,” a parent commented on Facebook.

Arrest of the Suspected Shooter

On Saturday, police arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with the shooting. Details on whether he was an Independence High student remain unclear. The police department expressed condolences on social media, stating, “Our hearts are with the family of the 17-year-old who lost his life, and all those impacted by this tragedy.”

Legacy of Levi Brown

Brown, who had a 1-year-old daughter, left a lasting impression on Coach Carter. Recalling Brown’s potential, Carter said on Facebook, “Get your rest, kid. I’ll always remember the last 7v7 you played and said, ‘Coach, thank you for believing in me.’ Always did and always will.”

Related Incident Stampede

A scare on Saturday at Los Angeles Southwest College in San Pedro, where noise caused a stampede, was later confirmed by police as non-violent.
