A pontoon boat capsized and sank near San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island, resulting in one fatality and three missing individuals. Authorities reported the incident occurred on Tuesday during a memorial service.

Sixteen passengers, primarily family members, were rescued from the water after the boat sank. Unfortunately, one person who was initially rescued alive from the cold waters later passed away, and a dog aboard also died.

San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen described the scene upon arrival, noting a nearly submerged three-deck pontoon vessel with its motor still running and leaking fuel.

Three individuals sustained injuries from falling off the boat and are currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

The search for the missing people is focused on the open waters west of the Golden Gate Bridge. Authorities have deployed divers, helicopters, and boats, with the search expected to continue throughout the night.

Witnesses contributed to updating the missing persons count from two to three. Chief Crispen stated, “We are in full rescue mode right now.”

The U.S. Coast Guard communicated via a post on X, affirming ongoing search and rescue operations. They promised further updates as new information becomes available.
