Tractor Supply plans to close around 75 Petsense stores across 17 states in the coming months. This decision is part of a business restructuring strategy. Tractor Supply’s CEO, Hal Lawton, stated in June that the company aims to focus on higher growth and higher return opportunities. CoStar reported that the Petsense stores on the closure list had shown negative cash flow.

Lawton mentioned that once the closures are complete, the company will maintain a strong and profitable Petsense business. This effort aligns with their strategy to integrate well into a broader pet ecosystem.

Gordon Brothers, known for handling Big Lots’ bankruptcy, has now listed more than 70 Petsense stores as available for lease. A representative from Tractor Supply confirmed these stores are set to close, but they will remain operational for a wind-down period lasting eight to ten weeks.

Tractor Supply acquired Petsense in 2016 for approximately $116 million. Former CEO Greg Sandfort regarded Petsense as a fitting complement to their retail operations. More recently, Tractor Supply acquired VIP Petcare, which provides in-store veterinary clinics at numerous locations. They also partnered with Instacart to deliver pet supplies and other products.
