While on vacation in Venice, Italy, a U.S. couple found themselves in an unexpected situation. Julia Latoff and her boyfriend, Mike, were on a family trip to Italy and Austria to celebrate his grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary. Their visit to the historic city of Venice took a surprising turn due to a misunderstanding about local regulations.
Running in the City
Both Julia and Mike are keen runners. “We both got into running right after college,” Julia shared with Newsweek. “I love that it’s an individual sport with a strong sense of community.” This passion led them to run in almost every city they visit. However, during their run in Venice, they encountered unexpected reactions because Mike was running without a shirt.
“It was early July and very hot,” Julia explained. “In NYC, this is normal during summer. We had run shirtless in Florence without issues.” But in Venice, people appeared displeased, shaking their heads and muttering.
Understanding Local Regulations
The couple soon realized the issue through reactions from locals. It turns out that local regulations in Venice prohibit shirtless attire in public streets and squares. The Venice City Council aims to uphold respectful behavior around the city’s cultural landmarks. Violators face fines up to €250 ($290).
Julia described their reaction, “As soon as we realized the mistake, we hid and bought a shirt.” This was an honest misunderstanding, and they felt embarrassed. These regulations are part of efforts to preserve Venice’s historic environment and ensure public safety.
Regulations and Fines
Venice has several rules aimed at safeguarding the city:
- Fines for bare-chested attire or swimwear: €25 to €500
- Eating or drinking while seated in inappropriate places: €100 to €200
- Swimming or diving in canals: €350
- Littering or dumping rubbish: up to €500
- Feeding pigeons or seagulls: fines between €25 and €500
- Bicycles are prohibited in the historic center
- Camping in public areas: €200
Additionally, offenders may receive a DASPO, banning them from the area.
A Lesson Learned
Julia shared their experience on Instagram with the advice to pack a running shirt when visiting Venice. Although Mike continues to run shirtless at home, he is more cautious when traveling abroad. Their story highlights the importance of understanding local customs and regulations.
