The Role of Common Sense in Modern News

Since October 2022, I have had the privilege of hosting the TV show “Fox News @ Night.” Every night from 11 p.m. to midnight Eastern time, we tackle the news head-on, present interviews with intriguing guests, and debate hot-button issues. This fast-paced hour, filled with straightforward talk, aims to equip viewers with a clear understanding of current global affairs, offering a touch of humor as they end their day.

This show is modern in approach, not just in its title. We filter the news to its essence, engage directly, and stand ready to call out misinformation when warranted. A staple of our program is the Common Sense Department—a segment lasting 75 seconds that has left an indelible mark on our viewers.

Every evening, I examine the news through a lens of well-grounded common sense. Often, major news stories, especially political ones, become shrouded in complexity and expert analysis. However, the reality is usually straightforward. My role is to respond with the insight of someone well-versed in human nature, someone who refuses to accept superficial spins.

The Common Sense Department is a segment where I share insights derived from personal experiences and broader societal lessons. It is an opportunity to blend wisdom gleaned from family values, faith, sports, community engagement, history, and patriotism with my unique perspective.

The feedback from viewers, through ratings, social media, and direct encounters, underscores the segment’s impact. The popularity of merchandise like mugs with the phrase “DID I OFFEND YOU WITH MY COMMON SENSE?” highlights the resonance of our message with the public.

The segment length of 75 seconds is deliberate. It’s a precise fit for concise communication, avoiding both the rush of a shorter format and the drag of overextension. Like common sense itself, this format is practical and immediately accessible.

The concept of common sense in news isn’t new. Historical figures like Thomas Paine championed similar ideals. Known for his straightforward style, Paine rose from modest beginnings to become a pivotal force in advocating American independence.

Overall, the Common Sense Department is a rare segment where I express genuine thoughts, unfiltered and honest—a format that echoes Paine’s timeless principles.
