The Importance of Secretary of State Elections

Free and fair elections form the bedrock of our representative democracy. A government’s legitimacy hinges on reflecting the people’s will, and elections are the primary means for citizens to express that will.

John Lewis, the late congressman and civil rights leader, described voting as a precious and powerful tool in a democracy. Similarly, former President Ronald Reagan referred to the right to vote as the ‘crown jewel of American liberties.’

Despite this, past President Donald Trump has been vocal about his refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election. Trump’s claims about illegal ballots, rigged machinery, and noncitizen voting have sowed doubt and mistrust in the electoral process.

Trump’s efforts to undermine the system include attempts to disenfranchise voters, preventing Democratic victories. As voters in 26 states prepare to elect secretaries of state, the individuals responsible for overseeing elections, the integrity of future elections hangs in the balance.

Shifts in Importance

The role of secretary of state, traditionally seen as a low-profile office, gained political significance after the 2000 Florida election. Katherine Harris’s controversial decision during the recount brought attention to the office’s potential influence.

Trump’s focus on his 2020 electoral defeat intensified scrutiny and politicization. Some allies aimed to control election mechanisms from within. In 2022, the America First SOS Coalition endorsed candidates in several battleground states like Arizona and Wisconsin, aiming to ensure pro-Trump elections management.

According to the States United Democracy Center, over two dozen election deniers sought secretary of state positions. Six candidates advanced, including those in critical states such as Arizona, Nevada, and Wisconsin.

Key Contests

Nevada’s Jim Marchant, having previously promoted Trump’s baseless claims, is once again running against Democrat Cisco Aguilar. Marchant’s proposals include the outlandish idea of using heartbeat technology to verify voter identity.

In Arizona, Democrat Adrian Fontes faces Republican Alexander Kolodin, penalized for filing unfounded legal claims regarding election fraud.

Wisconsin presents another battleground where Republican Jay Schroeder opposes the state’s bipartisan election commission. He has openly stated he wouldn’t have certified Biden’s win in 2020.

The Stakes

This election cycle demands attention to races beyond Congress and statehouses, particularly those for secretary of state. The people in these positions will greatly impact the integrity of elections, influencing whether they are conducted fairly and transparently.

As elections demand honesty and fairness, voters must stay informed about the candidates for these crucial roles and their potential impact on the democratic process.
