The Great American State Fair saw a massive turnout this Independence Day. Visitors gathered to enjoy the holiday festivities and reflect on the significance of the Fourth of July.

Individuals at the fair shared their thoughts on spending the holiday with family. Tom Rutledge, a visitor from Texas, emphasized the emotional connection to the country and the sacrifices people made for its freedom. Accompanied by his 13-year-old grandson, Rutledge wanted the young boy to appreciate the celebration firsthand. “I wanted him to experience this,” he explained. He noted a gap in how the younger generation understands the nation’s values.

“It kind of makes us emotional because of our country and the people who died… and gave up what they’ve done,” Rutledge said.

Despite concerns about awareness among the youth, young attendees displayed strong patriotic enthusiasm. Children expressed their excitement for fireworks and enjoyed the spectacle of planes flying overhead, undeterred by travel challenges or weather conditions.

The fair also served as a reminder of national unity for adults. One father, who traveled from Florida, shared his joy in being around fellow patriotic Americans, including youths and service members who protect the nation. Meeting people from diverse backgrounds fostered a sense of camaraderie and shared values.

Judy and her family made the journey from Connecticut to support the state after officials retracted backing the fair. “People are amazingly nice,” she observed. Her sentiments were echoed by a couple who bonded with others from different states while waiting in line for the Ferris wheel. Their common love for the country and festive spirit created new friendships across geographical divides.
