A tragic case involving a 2-year-old girl, Annelise Camp, has concluded with her being removed from life support following a prolonged legal battle with a Texas hospital. The incident began when Annelise’s parents sought to prevent the hospital from testing her for brain death after she nearly drowned in a hotel pool on Memorial Day.

Annelise’s parents, Johnston and Joy Camp, shared their grief in a statement, expressing their heartbreak while maintaining faith in divine love and promises. The family believed Annelise displayed signs of life and required more time for possible recovery.

Annelise was initially found unconscious in a hotel pool and was subsequently taken to Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. The hospital recommended brain death testing, but Annelise’s parents obtained a temporary court injunction to halt such procedures, convincing the court of Annelise’s condition and seeking alternative treatments. During this time, Annelise remained on a ventilator despite having a heartbeat.

The Texas Right to Life organization supported the Camp family’s legal efforts, stating this legal victory provided Annelise an additional two months for potential recovery. Despite the family’s desires, transferring Annelise to another facility proved difficult as most medical centers required brain death testing for acceptance.

Eventually, Annelise was moved to a hospital in Louisiana, and later returned to Texas for treatment at Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. Despite various efforts, Annelise was removed from life support on Monday, leading to her passing shortly after.

The case underscored broader issues surrounding such health decisions. Texas law defines brain death as an irreversible end to brain function, and it allows hospitals to withdraw life-sustaining measures under such circumstances.

Through this difficult journey, Annelise’s family pursued every treatment option, sharing updates on platforms like GoFundMe. They reported optimistic signs at the Louisiana facility and explored specialized treatments.

A memorial service for Annelise is scheduled to take place next Wednesday in Houston.
