Testosterone Trends on Social Media: Safety and Concerns

Social Media and Testosterone Trends

Social media users may have noticed a trend: testosterone-maxxing, where individuals aim to increase testosterone levels both naturally and artificially. Notably, a TikTok user, @learningwliam, accumulated over 177,000 views discussing studies that reveal declining testosterone levels in men, particularly those who are obese. However, lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, quality sleep, maintaining a nutritious diet, and reducing alcohol intake have been shown to help enhance naturally occurring testosterone.

“When testosterone therapy isn’t indicated, it can lead to dependence on an unnecessary treatment,” noted Dr. Alexander W. Pastuszak, a urologist. “Men seeking higher levels may misattribute issues like fatigue or low libido to testosterone rather than sleep, stress, or weight-related issues.”

The Influence of Social Media

Liam, a TikTok influencer, shared several methods he employed to improve his testosterone, receiving approval from doctors. These include zone 2 cardio and good sleep hygiene. In addition, he avoided excessive phone use, such as doom-scrolling, which may negatively impact testosterone due to increased stress.

Though Liam suggested cold showers after workouts or in the morning could boost testosterone, this claim remains unproven. Nevertheless, cold showers offer health benefits even without impacting testosterone.

More Isn’t Always Better

Pastuszak expressed concern over men’s health due to obsession with testosterone levels. Elevated levels can mask underlying issues and create dependency on unneeded therapies. This misconception is fueled by social media turning testosterone into a symbol of masculinity and vitality rather than focusing solely on physiological health.

The Dangers of Unregulated Supplements

Pastuszak outlined two main hazards associated with testosterone supplements:

  • Many over-the-counter products are unregulated, with inaccurate claims about their contents and dosages.
  • Proper monitoring of testosterone use is crucial. Testosterone can lead to blood thickening, elevated estrogen levels, worsen sleep apnea, and suppress fertility. Without clinical oversight, the risks of excessive dosing are magnified.

For testosterone treatments, users should seek advice from qualified professionals who can properly diagnose and monitor therapy.
