In Dearborn, Michigan, a regular town hall meeting escalated into a debate about the role of Muslim culture in American civic life. Pastor Lorenzo Sewell of 180 Church claimed the town operates under Sharia law.
America, we have lost this city. This is a city that is no longer up under American laws., Sewell stated. He added,Enough is enough.
The incident occurred during a rise in anti-Islam protests in Dearborn. Sewell believes that Muslim communities in Michigan aim to align with their religious perspective, conflicting with broader American views.
Sewell speaks frequently at public events, including the Republican National Convention in July 2024.
He alleged favoritism towards Muslims under religious freedom, pointing to a case where Muslim counterprotesters faced inadequate repercussions after assaulting local activist Jake Lang.
Lang, known for his contentious interactions with Dearborn’s Muslim community, often presents himself as a defender of American culture. He frequently posts content identifying with religious and militant imagery.
In one online statement, Lang expressed a readiness to
load up CRUISE SHIPS with American weapons.
Lang was involved in a physical altercation at the Arbaeen March, a religious event in Dearborn. Video footage shows Lang being assaulted while holding controversial signs.
Despite one arrest by Dearborn Police, Lang and Sewell argue more action is necessary.
City officials, including Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, refute claims of inequality. Hammoud stresses the diverse and inclusive nature of Dearborn.
When people portray Dearborn as overtaken by Muslims, they erase contributions from our Christian community,Hammoud stated during a city council meeting.
Dearborn has a predominantly Arab population, with 54.5% of residents reporting Middle Eastern or North African ancestry.
