Tension Escalates at CBS’s ’60 Minutes’ Over Leadership Changes

In an unexpected development at CBS’s “60 Minutes,” correspondent Scott Pelley has publicly criticized the new leadership. According to reports, Pelley accused CBS News head Bari Weiss of undermining the program and questioned the qualifications of its new executive producer, Nick Bilton.

Pelley voiced these concerns during a meeting with the staff and Bilton, who Weiss recently appointed as the new executive producer. The meeting’s details, shared by the Status website, revealed Pelley’s dissatisfaction with recent changes, including the dismissal of key staff.

During the meeting, Pelley confronted Bilton about the terminations of former producer Tanya Simon and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega. Pelley expressed doubt about Bilton’s background since he lacks traditional broadcast news experience.

Status also reported that Pelley criticized Weiss’s qualifications and her impact on “CBS Evening News,” labeling her changes as catastrophic. Bilton defended Weiss, stating her dedication to the network, but Pelley was unconvinced, claiming she was brought in to dismantle the show.

Efforts by Weiss and Bilton to communicate with Pelley regarding the recent changes were unsuccessful. A source close to CBS News, speaking anonymously, noted the disappointment in Pelley’s airing grievances publicly despite private engagement attempts.

The New York Times reported that Pelley’s voice conveyed noticeable emotion during the confrontation, highlighting the tense atmosphere. An unnamed executive mentioned that Weiss was advised not to attend the meeting.

The meeting occurred shortly after Weiss sent a memo advocating for a “new approach” to adapt the program for the 21st century. Her partnership with CBS News president Tom Cibrowski emphasized expanding “60 Minutes” beyond its traditional broadcast, maintaining high standards of ambition and fairness.

In the meeting, Bilton was praised by Weiss and others for embodying the founders’ energy and ambition. Despite criticism, Bilton stated he was not intimidated by Pelley. “I’ve been a journalist for 25 years, Scott,” Bilton said, according to Status. “You won’t intimidate me here.” Pelley’s comments garnered applause from several staff members, reflecting a divided atmosphere within “60 Minutes.”
