A teenager in Mississippi is accused of breaking into an elderly couple’s home and killing them, leading to a standoff with police. Investigators report that on June 3, Cordarius Hobbs, 17, allegedly entered the home of 74-year-old Billy Blair and his 71-year-old wife, Virginia Carol Blair, in Mendenhall, Mississippi, and murdered them.

Deputies from the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene around 12:24 p.m. after the couple’s family members could not contact them. Upon arrival, deputies faced gunfire, according to officials. Department of Public Safety spokesperson Bailey Martin noted that a burglary was ongoing when deputies arrived and that both civilians and officers were “pinned down by gunfire.”

While the Rankin County Sheriff, Bryan Bailey, mentioned that Hobbs initially indicated he would surrender at the front door, he instead fled through the back, prompting a chase. During the confrontation, one deputy was shot. Mississippi state troopers eventually arrested Hobbs after shooting him, resulting in non-life-threatening injuries.

Hobbs faces charges including two counts of capital murder, burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, and multiple counts of assaulting law enforcement officers and individuals over the age of 65.

The family shared a statement online expressing their heartbreak, saying that they are “crushed in spirit, bruised, and brokenhearted.”

Friend Jason Busby remembered the couple for their generosity and kindness, saying that “The man would’ve given you the shirt off his back, and his wife was the same. They were just great people. It’s just a tragedy. Everybody around here is still in shock.”
