A man involved in a robbery near an Atlanta transit station was apprehended after stealing a police cruiser and crashing it. Atlanta police arrested 30-year-old Phelan Thorpe, accused of a robbery near the Midtown MARTA station. Thorpe faced charges of robbery and simple battery related to the incident.
Officers responded to a location on the 2000 block of Thomasville Drive SE at 5:15 p.m. Monday, following reports of a potentially armed wanted man. Video from Atlanta Police shows Thorpe following a woman from the Midtown MARTA station and attacking her near 10th and West Peachtree streets.
Upon locating Thorpe, he managed to escape in a police patrol vehicle. He drove into Clayton County and collided with a tanker truck on Interstate 675. Police apprehended Thorpe after the crash. He sustained minor injuries but no serious harm occurred to officers or civilians.
Earlier on Saturday, officers attended an incident near 10th Street and West Peachtree Street. The assault led to injuries for a woman, who was evaluated at a hospital. Allegedly, Thorpe approached her with claims of possessing a gun, demanding her purse and iPhone. A physical altercation ensued, during which the suspect punched her, taking her phone and driver’s license.
Surveillance footage shows the suspect trailing the woman before confronting her. Thorpe was later identified and charged with robbery and simple battery. Details on how Thorpe accessed the patrol vehicle are unclear. Police inquiries into the alleged vehicle theft and crash are ongoing.
