Earlier this week, two drones were observed over a German military base, only two days after authorities found a drone with explosives at a cargo airport according to German Armed Forces.

Surveillance at the Bundeswehr base in Mechernich identified two drones around 10 p.m. on Thursday. The German Joint Force Command confirmed the sightings and deployed military police to the area.

The Euskirchen police department has launched an investigation into the incident. However, the police have not commented, and the military has not provided more information.

Drone sightings at civilian and cargo airports continue to rise. Last year, similar activities over European Union countries’ airspace caused public concern and led to canceled flights, stranding many passengers.

The drone carrying explosives was discovered at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport before midnight on Tuesday. The device was defused and believed by U.S. officials to be of Russian origin, as reported to CBS News.

This airport plays a strategic role for NATO, serving as a hub for the Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS). It supports missions along NATO’s eastern flank, spreading from Finland to Romania, and assists EU and alliance operations.

These incidents occur amidst U.S. intelligence assessments suggesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin might be willing to authorize actions that could cross into NATO territories, according to briefings provided to CBS News.

Western officials have accused Russia of conducting numerous attacks and incidents. These include suspected drone incursions into Romania and increased sabotage and cyber operations throughout Europe since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine over four years ago.

The Russian Embassy in Germany on Friday dismissed the Leipzig drone incident as an instance of “anti-Russian hysteria” in Germany.
