The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has begun, drawing countless enthusiasts to the small town of Sturgis, South Dakota, and the surrounding Black Hills. This year marks the 86th edition, known as the largest motorcycle rally in the world.

Event Overview

This 10-day event takes place every August, incorporating races, concerts, and group rides. Annually, approximately 500,000 attendees visit Sturgis, which normally has a population of 7,100. Throughout the rally, motorcycles fill the streets, and riders explore the expansive Black Hills.

Activities extend beyond Sturgis, featuring events such as concerts, stunt shows, motorcycle demonstrations, vendor displays, and organized rides across the region.

Concerts and Performances

Headlining this year’s concerts is country star Lainey Wilson, set to perform on August 12. Additional artists on the lineup include YUNGBLUD, Megadeth, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rob Zombie, and Insane Clown Posse.

The rally sees Sturgis transform into a lively city, bustling with hundreds of thousands of visitors.

Special Events and Features

Two significant women’s motorcycle rides, the Women Riders World Relay and Shantell’s Sisterhood Ride, will finish at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame’s second annual Pearl’s Jam event, celebrating women in motorcycling.

Harley-Davidson plans to unveil its new Deadwood motorcycle at the rally. This model, inspired by the post-war history of the event, is making its debut. Meanwhile, Indian Motorcycle introduces the Indian Chief Vintage Sturgis SD Edition, incorporating classic designs and special paint inspired by the 1930s.

Scenic Rides and Destinations

The rally serves as a starting point for excursions throughout the Black Hills. Popular destinations include Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park, Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park, Bear Butte State Park, and historic areas like Deadwood. Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming is a favored spot among attendees.

History and Legacy

The Sturgis Rally was established in 1938 by Indian dealer Pappy Hoel. Coe Meyer, a motorcycle historian, credits Hoel with fostering a sense of camaraderie that attracts many visitors each year.

Pappy was a P.T. Barnum-like figure who loved motorcycles, racing, and motorcyclists.

Hoel’s creativity and passion for motorcycles made the rally synonymous with the biking community. Vinny Terranova, who operates Pappy’s Vintage Cycles, recalls Hoel’s warmth and hospitality towards attendees.

The Hoels managed the rally for nearly 50 years before the City of Sturgis took over in the 1980s.
