The primary objective of Netanyahu’s administration became the unrestrained continuation of military efforts, disregarding both internal and external pressures. This perpetual state of warfare aligned with the national security doctrine that supporting Israel entailed endorsing its aggressive policies.
The recent developments have led to growing tension between the Israeli government and the Trump administration. Statement from President Trump allegedly labeling Netanyahu as “crazy” and expressing that “everyone hates you now” surfaced after Israel’s escalations in Lebanon. Vice President JD Vance also attempted to modulate Israel’s actions.
While Netanyahu has refrained from publicly showing any frustration, his supporters within the Israeli media sector have not been as reserved. A far-right TV host, Yinon Magal, harshly criticized Mr. Vance and used derogatory language against Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Additionally, an ally of Netanyahu expressed shock over Trump’s agreement with Iran, suggesting that Netanyahu shared this sentiment. A poll conducted post-U.S.-Iran memorandum showed a significant decline in Trump’s favorability among Israelis.
The alliance between the U.S. and Israel, as well as the dynamic between their leaders, remains intact, albeit strained. Israel’s prominent influence in U.S. politics, combined with its regional military and economic dominance sustained by U.S. support, faces challenges. The effectiveness of the pro-Israel lobby is now under scrutiny following Israel’s exhaustive efforts against Iran.
The schism in the bilateral relationship is most evident in Vice President Vance’s comments. He cautioned that Israel could not resolve every national security issue through force alone, as reported in a conversation with Times columnist Ross Douthat. During a White House briefing, Vance further advised that Israel should refrain from alienating its vital ally, the United States.
