ESPN host Stephen A. Smith discussed political tensions surrounding the WNBA, attributing some blame to “the right” but ultimately focusing on the league’s internal shortcomings. Smith claimed the WNBA’s lack of clear rules and leadership, particularly regarding transgender athletes, has contributed to ongoing controversies.

During his YouTube show, Smith emphasized the necessity for the league to establish firm guidelines. He argued that the absence of such regulations has allowed disputes about biological males in women’s sports to dominate discussions.

Smith accused conservatives, including former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, of exploiting the controversy for political gain by declaring their eligibility for the 2027 WNBA Draft. Despite this, he acknowledged that the WNBA itself is to blame for leaving vulnerabilities open for political opponents to exploit.

Smith further discussed Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, who has been vocal about women’s sports. He explained that Cunningham’s views, which challenge WNBA norms, have attracted criticism.

He mentioned Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, questioning if Uthmeier would show similar interest if an athlete held liberal views. While supporting Cunningham’s stance on protecting female athletics, Smith criticized politicization from both sides.

Smith concluded by urging the WNBA to address the issues to prevent further politicization. He warned that if the league continues exhibiting perceived double standards, critics will persist in highlighting these inconsistencies.
