Stefany Shaheen, daughter of retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, won the Democratic primary in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District early Wednesday. Her victory marks a crucial step for Democrats aiming to secure control of the House of Representatives, as the district’s current representative, Chris Pappas, is advancing his political career by running for the Senate.
Pappas, who has served since 2019, confirmed his Senate bid last year. In his statement, he expressed gratitude and emphasized his commitment to continue the fight in the U.S. Senate.
“I’m honored that the people of New Hampshire have entrusted me to fight for them; I’m proud of what we have accomplished together and I’m going to continue this fight in the U.S. Senate,” Pappas said in a press release.
Stefany Shaheen’s victory comes amid a crowded field of Democratic candidates competing for the open seat. Among the challengers were eight contenders, including Maura Sullivan, a Marine veteran and former Obama administration official, Carleigh Beriont, a union organizer, and Christian Urrutia, an Army National Guard officer and attorney, who later endorsed Shaheen.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen announced her retirement last March and openly supported her daughter’s candidacy. She praised Stefany for her dedication to serving her community.
“I’m so proud that Stefany is answering the call to serve the district she was born and raised in, where she has started a business, worked on the Portsmouth City Council and advocated for affordable health care and clean water,” said Jeanne Shaheen.
Stefany Shaheen has focused her campaign on key issues like Medicare for All, expanding tax breaks for first-time homebuyers, and reforming Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Her campaign officially launched on May 28, 2025, with promises to enact significant changes.
Maura Sullivan, meanwhile, presented herself as an experienced leader, highlighting her military service and past work within the Obama administration. Her platform includes measures against price gouging, improvements to the VA, opposition to Trump’s tariffs, and increased federal investment in housing.
Having secured the primary win, Stefany Shaheen is set to contest the general election on November 3.
