Spencer Pratt recently criticized Ben Affleck over comments on addiction and recovery. Affleck had made these remarks during a 2021 interview on “The Howard Stern Show.” The 53-year-old actor, renowned for his Oscars, has long spoken about his struggles with alcoholism.
Affleck argued that experiencing suffering is the only effective cure for addiction. He expressed skepticism about expensive rehabs and questioned their effectiveness. “Alcoholics Anonymous is a good organization,” Affleck acknowledged. He added, “but the cure for addiction is suffering.” According to Affleck, reaching a personal breaking point is crucial in overcoming addiction. He shared a pivotal moment in his life when he realized the impact of his addiction on his relationship with his children.
Spencer Pratt, a former Los Angeles mayoral candidate, vehemently disagreed with Affleck’s viewpoint. He reposted the interview clip and criticized Affleck’s perspective. Pratt challenged Affleck to explain his views on Skid Row, where addiction persists despite significant suffering.
“I’d love for Ben to join me on Skid Row and explain his addiction theory,” Pratt wrote. “Plenty of suffering out there, and yet… somehow the addiction persists,” he noted.
Pratt, who focused on Los Angeles’ addiction crisis during his campaign, argued that drugs like fentanyl and methamphetamine contribute to homelessness. He called for involuntary treatment for severe addiction cases, stating that many individuals cannot seek help independently.
Pratt unveiled a plan emphasizing treatment over housing solutions. He proposed creating rehabilitation centers on federal land and discouraged taxpayer-funded drug paraphernalia distribution. Pratt also advocated for enforcing drug laws and targeting major drug dealers and cartels.
As an advocate against homelessness and addiction, Pratt has criticized political opponents for inadequate responses to these issues. He accused L.A. Mayor Karen Bass and councilmember Nithya Raman of failing to address addiction effectively despite significant spending.
Ben Affleck has been candid about his recovery journey, seeking treatment multiple times, notably in 2001, 2017, and 2018. He described his struggle with alcoholism as ongoing but stressed the importance of sobriety for his children. Affleck’s desire to avoid repeating his own father’s mistakes motivates his commitment to recovery.
In a 2020 interview, Affleck discussed his father’s alcoholism and the impact on his own life. He emphasized the importance of sobriety during his children’s formative years, aiming to protect them from the hardships he faced.
