Mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt brought his campaign to South Los Angeles on Wednesday. This area is significant as incumbent Mayor Karen Bass represented it during her Congressional tenure.

Pratt spent around two hours at a block party in Hyde Park, interacting with about a hundred attendees. While he abstained from answering media queries, Pratt participated in a meet and greet in Sherman Oaks on Saturday, maintaining the same approach.

Among the attendees was Marcella Anglada, who is 61. She highlighted local infrastructure issues by showing Pratt a video on her phone of damaged sidewalks. These sidewalks hinder her mobility as she relies on a motorized wheelchair. Anglada expressed confidence in Pratt’s commitment to resolving such challenges, stating, “this is why I voted for you.”

Older residents confronted with mobility issues due to broken sidewalks find it challenging to navigate their neighborhoods. Anglada shared these concerns with The Times after the event.

Jonathan Parker, a local, appreciated Pratt for his presence. Parker commented, “If you can go here, you can go anywhere.” He and his wife, Victoriah Bech Parker, operate a Skid Row charity. They have requested the U.S. Justice Department to look into alleged animal abuse in the area. According to Bech Parker, Pratt is the only mayoral candidate supporting their cause.

Bech Parker expressed her willingness to collaborate across party lines to enhance the environment in downtown L.A., noted for homelessness and encampments.

The campaign provided barbecue, ice cream, and drinks to attendees while they enjoyed music under shaded canopies. At one moment, Pratt posed near a barbecue trailer, vowing, “we’re gonna have lots of grilling in L.A.” This was a nod to his opponent Nithya Raman, who had proposed banning backyard barbecues on fire danger days, a stance she has since softened.

Supporters from various city parts, like Miki Yamashita, attended the event. Yamashita manages an Instagram page, Asians for Pratt. She wore a chartreuse shirt with “pratt” on it, echoing Charli XCX’s album cover style. Yamashita supports Pratt because he aligns with many Asian Americans aiming to boost small businesses and family well-being. She stated, “I am a frustrated Los Angeles resident, just like Spencer.”

Throughout the day, reporters and television crews followed Pratt. Several others joined, eager to capture images for social media.
