Since a scoreless draw with Cape Verde, Spain outscored opponents 12-1. Goalkeeper Unai Simón allowed only one goal against Belgium, after a record 650 scoreless minutes. Spain holds an unbeaten streak of 37 matches leading up to this point.
Oyarzabal scored from the spot in the 22nd minute after Yamal was fouled by Lucas Digne. This marked the first time either team faced a deficit during this World Cup. Porro’s goal resulted from a collaboration with Dani Olmo.
France, noted for its defense, allowed only two goals before encountering Spain. Spain’s additional opportunities in the first half were blocked, a testament to France’s defensive capability.
Mbappé, tied for tournament-high goals with Lionel Messi, still has the third-place match to add to his tally. Messi, also in the race for the Golden Boot, aims for further achievements in this World Cup.
“As the captain, I have to take all the responsibility and I have no problem with that,” said Mbappé. “We wanted to go to the final. We didn’t go.”
