Sox Hitting Strides Impress with Increased Offensive Output in 2026

The Chicago White Sox have shown significant improvement in their offensive performance this season. Director of hitting Ryan Fuller has cited various statistics that showcase these advancements.

Offensive Improvement

The team’s scoring average has increased notably. Entering Wednesday’s game against the Houston Astros, the Sox led the American League with an average of 4.78 runs per game, a jump from 3.99 in the previous year.

Fuller shared insights from Minneapolis, acknowledging the successful transition of the new hitting program. He emphasized the tangible way players are embodying the values held by the team.

The Sox are currently leading the AL Central by three games over the Cleveland Guardians, as they aim for postseason success.

Key Players and Statistics

Chicago White Sox’s focus on home runs is evident, ranking third in the AL with 181 homers. Since July 26, they have hit 50 home runs, the second-highest in the majors.

Munetaka Murakami, Colson Montgomery, and Miguel Vargas have each achieved 29 home runs this season. Murakami’s performance includes 22 strikeouts and 12 walks over his last 13 games, indicating he is due for a rebound.

Ryan Fuller stated, “We’ve seen — even though it’s getting out a little bit more, a little bit more swing-and-miss right now — the ability to take the walks when they’re presented, to continue to have really good at-bats.”

Manager Will Venable also expressed confidence in Murakami, noting his solid swing decisions and lack of distress under pressure.

Colson Montgomery

Despite a challenging second-half (.207 average post-All-Star break), Montgomery has shown resilience with three multi-hit games in his recent outings. Fuller commented on Montgomery’s self-awareness and readiness to make necessary adjustments.

Tristan Peters

August brought an impressive performance from outfielder Tristan Peters, hitting .320 for the month. Peters tied a franchise record with home runs in five consecutive games. Fuller praised Peters for learning from his struggles and regaining form.

Miguel Vargas

Vargas has been a standout player, maintaining an 18-game streak of reaching base. His strong slash line of .381/.530/.635, along with leading the AL with 93 runs, underscores his contributions. Fuller attributed Vargas’ success to improvements in his decisions, contact, and damage in at-bats.

Pitching Update

Pitcher Davis Martin returned from the injured list before Wednesday’s game, recovering from a finger blister. The team announced Martin would start against the Astros.

Tanner McDougal was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte following Martin’s reinstatement. Despite being recalled, McDougal did not play in Tuesday’s 5-1 win.
