South Korea Relies on Son Heung-min on Soccer’s Biggest Stage

Son Heung-min, popularly known as “Sonny,” created waves in August when he decided to move from Tottenham Hotspur to LAFC, signing a contract extending through the next year. Standing 6 feet tall, he is considered the most recognized Asian soccer player globally. His popularity in South Korea is immense, and the Los Angeles Times once noted that he is “more popular than K-pop.”

Sonny left South Korea as a teenager to begin his professional career in Germany, playing in the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV and Bayer Leverkusen. He joined Spurs in 2015 and made 454 appearances. As captain, Sonny led Spurs to win the UEFA Europa League, securing the team’s first major trophy in 17 years.

Sonny’s growth into a leader for both club and country is attributed to his dynamic playing style. Known for his creative playmaking, he adapts to any role as required by the game situation. His long stride adds to his speed, making him a formidable opponent regardless of his pitch position.

A former Premier League Golden Boot winner, Sonny is currently experiencing a scoring drought for both club and national teams. However, he leads MLS in assists, which may still benefit South Korea. This summer will be his fourth World Cup for South Korea, with the main group stage challenge expected to be co-hosts Mexico.
