Even Sir Anthony Hopkins, with his illustrious career, faces self-doubt. Reflecting on his debut album, Life Is a Dream, he mentions the nagging feeling of impostor syndrome. Yet, it did not deter him from completing a remarkable collection of 12 compositions crafted over several decades. Renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel, along with the Philharmonia Orchestra, brought Hopkins’ music to life at London’s Alexandra Palace in April. The album is set to be released by Decca Records on August 21.

Hopkins’ Musical Journey

At 88, Hopkins reveals that music has always been his first love. He shares how growing up surrounded by postwar music profoundly influenced him. He began playing the piano at just four years old and composed his first piece, a waltz, at the age of 22. Comparing music to acting, he finds that music allows for more freedom, contrasting it with the discipline required in acting.

Before releasing Life Is a Dream, Hopkins had already composed scores for several films. He started with the 1993 film Shadowlands, where he portrayed C.S. Lewis. His compositions have also featured in films such as 1996’s August, 2007’s Slipstream, and 2020’s Elyse.

Childhood Memories and Life Reflections

The album Life Is a Dream captures memories of Hopkins’ childhood and adolescence in Wales. While he celebrates his life, he acknowledges an underlying sadness by contemplating life as a long goodbye. This tension runs throughout the album. The first single, 1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra: II. Bracken Road, evokes nostalgia with its melancholic cello. Similarly, the piece Stella Aria, dedicated to his wife, explores themes of loneliness and happiness.

Hopkins has spent considerable time in reflection, evident in both his memoir, We Did OK, Kid, and this album. At nearly 89, he looks back in disbelief at his achievements, admitting he never expected his career path. Despite his success in acting, he remains fearless about mortality, expressing gratitude for his long life.

Bradley Cooper’s Influence and Future Plans

Bradley Cooper played a key role in connecting Hopkins with Dudamel. After experiencing Hopkins’ work with the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Cooper recommended him to Dudamel. Hopkins fondly recollects the recording session at Alexandra Palace, where Dudamel praised his work enthusiastically.

There may be live performances on the horizon. Hopkins dreams of performing at Carnegie Hall, inspired by the 1947 film Carnegie Hall. The prospect of realizing another dream adds to the chapters of his already remarkable life.
