Singer-Songwriter Duncan Sheik Passes Away at 56

Duncan Sheik, renowned for the hit song Barely Breathing and his work on the Tony and Grammy-winning musical Spring Awakening, passed away at the age of 56. His mother, Suzanne Sheik, confirmed his death due to organ failure to The New York Times.

A statement on Sheik’s social media expressed profound sadness over his passing, emphasizing his influence in music and theater. It described him as a father, husband, son, brother, and friend, remembered for his wit, intelligence, and deep spirit.

Before his passing, Sheik’s Instagram shared updates on his health, acknowledging his critical but stable condition. Requests for privacy were made, with promises of updates when suitable.

A statement coinciding with the Off-Broadway premiere of Sheik’s new musical, Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, also noted the staging of Spring Awakening.

Sheik’s 1996 release, Barely Breathing, spent 55 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 16, and earned him a Grammy nomination. The song gained renewed popularity through shows like Glee and Girls.

His Broadway success with Spring Awakening, adapted from Frank Wedekind’s play, led to 859 performances and eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The production helped actors like Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele gain recognition.

Sheik expanded his theater contributions with projects like American Psycho, Whisper House, and the 2022 album Claptrap.

Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Sheik grew up in New Jersey and South Carolina, engaging with music from a young age.

He leaves behind his wife, Nora Ariffin, and their daughter, Ines.
