A bystander remained in serious but stable condition on Sunday after being struck by gunfire outside the White House. The incident occurred when a man fired at a security checkpoint. U.S. Secret Service officers responded by fatally shooting the suspect.

The Secret Service reported that the unidentified bystander suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The exact circumstances of how the bystander was shot are unclear.

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best from Dundalk, Maryland, began shooting at the White House security checkpoint. Secret Service officers returned fire, resulting in Best’s death at a hospital. No officers were injured in the incident.

Secret Service Director Sean Curran expressed concern for the injured bystander, stating, “Our thoughts are with the innocent bystander who was wounded during this incident.” He expressed hope for the individual’s full recovery.

President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the shooting. This marks the third shooting incident near the president in the past month. Previous incidents included an armed individual at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner and a shooting near the Washington Monument earlier this month.

In a social media post, Trump mentioned that the suspect had a “possible obsession with our Country’s most cherished structure.” He used the incident to advocate for a new secure ballroom at the White House site, requesting $1 billion from Congress for security improvements.

District of Columbia court records show Best had a previous encounter with law enforcement near the White House last July. He attempted to enter the grounds at a different checkpoint, ignoring officers’ commands and claiming to be Jesus Christ. He expressed a desire to be arrested.

Speaking to The Washington Post, a woman identifying as Best’s mother expressed disbelief upon learning about the incident through social media. She described her son as non-violent despite online claims.
