Serena Williams Makes Wimbledon Comeback

Serena Williams is back on the tennis court, and the excitement is palpable. Williams herself expressed surprise at her return. Speaking at her first Wimbledon press conference, she admitted, “When I evolved, I never thought I’d come back.”

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion made her return to professional tennis at the HSBC Championships on June 9, partnering with Victoria Mboko in doubles. She continued her comeback the next week by playing doubles with Karolina Muchova at the Berlin Tennis Open. Now, Williams, at 44, is set to play singles again, having received a wild card for Wimbledon next week.

“I had until Monday to decide,” Williams said during her press conference. “I think it was, like, Sunday because I just wasn’t sure up until then. Honestly, I’m still not even sure, but we’ll see.”

Williams acknowledged her nerves: “I expect to be nervous,” she stated. “I was also nervous every single match I ever played in my life. I think that showed the passion and the love and the care — that I cared about my job. Whether it was the first round or the second round or the finals, I’ve always had some nerves. But then I just dust ’em off, then I move on.”

She revealed giving herself a pep talk when deciding to accept the Wimbledon wild card, questioning herself but ultimately deciding to seize the opportunity, as it might not arise again.

Williams has an impressive history at Wimbledon, with seven singles titles to her name, the latest in 2016. She will face Australia’s Maya Joint, 20, on Tuesday, June 30. In addition to her singles matches, Williams will compete in doubles alongside her sister, Venus Williams, 46. Together, they own 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, including six from Wimbledon.
