Serena Williams and Coco Gauff’s Potential Partnership

Days before Serena Williams confirmed her return to tennis, Coco Gauff addressed the topic at Roland-Garros. When asked about the possibility of Williams’ comeback, Gauff expressed enthusiasm.

“That would be really cool,” Gauff, aged 22, commented. “I mentioned earlier that my biggest regret was not having had the chance to play against her. There are rumors circulating, so if they hold any truth, we’re likely to find out soon. It would be great for the sport to have a legend back on the court.”

Williams, now 44, has a different plan regarding playing against Gauff. Rather than competing in singles, Williams is interested in pairing with Gauff for doubles.

“I would really love to play with Coco,” Williams stated after her match with Karolina Muchova at the Berlin Tennis Open resulted in a loss. “She was definitely on my list of desired partners. Despite not researching her current standings, Karolina proved to be an excellent player and a joy to watch.”

Williams continued, “I’ve also enjoyed watching Coco’s progress. Knowing her focus is primarily on singles, I regret not asking her earlier about doubles. I simply wasn’t aware.”

Williams made her return to professional tennis during the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club in London, playing doubles with Victoria Mboko, aged 19. Their success was halted due to Mboko’s knee injury. Williams then shifted her focus to Berlin.

It was announced this week that Williams and her sister Venus will compete in doubles at Wimbledon. Serena Williams holds a record as a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, which is the highest in the Open Era among women. Alongside Venus, she has clinched 14 doubles titles, with six victories occurring at Wimbledon.
