An intense Senate meeting concluded with a victory for President Donald Trump and his administration as several key Republicans changed their stance on limiting war powers in Iran. As lawmakers prepared to leave Washington, D.C., for a break, the Senate dismissed Democrats’ efforts to restrict Trump’s authority, despite ongoing discussions between the U.S. and Iran for a lasting peace agreement.
The proposal was the same war powers resolution introduced by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., which had previously passed and surprised Republicans. A heated debate erupted between Trump and Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., over the Iran situation and the administration’s transparency during a closed meeting focused on Trump’s voter ID and citizenship verification initiatives.
Trump contended that the war powers resolution, passed earlier with the aid of absent Republicans, undermined the administration’s negotiating leverage with Iran. Subsequent discussions at the White House with crucial undecided members shifted their views, securing a win for the administration as it strives to extend negotiations beyond the 60-day memorandum with Iran.
Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., and other Republican leaders are advancing budget reconciliation plans to fund government areas closed due to Democratic opposition to Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement measures.
