The Senate is currently involved in deliberations concerning two significant pieces of legislation: the CLARITY Act, which seeks to regulate cryptocurrency, and a measure that addresses regulations in college sports.
Cryptocurrency Regulation Through the CLARITY Act
The CLARITY Act aims to create a federal regulatory structure for digital currencies and assets. This would establish oversight by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). While the bill has bipartisan backing, Democrats contend that specific ethical guidelines for President Trump and his family are necessary due to his substantial earnings from cryptocurrency. Despite revisions to strengthen consumer protection, there is ongoing resistance from several Democratic senators.
“We need crypto legislation,” stated Sen. Elizabeth Warren, “but not legislation influenced by the industry.”
Sen. Cynthia Lummis advocates for the legislation, arguing that without it, digital assets might relocate abroad to countries with clearer regulations.
College Sports Regulation Bill
The Senate is also evaluating a bill that addresses regulations in college sports, motivated by recent controversies surrounding athlete transfers and eligibility. Spearheaded by Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell, the proposal seeks to cap transfers to one per athlete, establish limitations on money for name, image, and likeness (NIL), and prevent professional athletes from returning to college sports.
“The system is chaotic,” said Vice President JD Vance, expressing concern over athletes repeatedly transferring between schools and competing for extended durations.
The legislation is backed by former Alabama coach Nick Saban, who has encouraged support for this American tradition.
Both bills face critical timelines and potential hurdles in the House. With the midterms looming, lawmakers may be pressed for time, potentially delaying legislative action until the new Congress session.
