Sen. Bill Cassidy’s Political Career Ends Amid Trump Tensions

Senator Bill Cassidy’s loss in the Louisiana Republican primary marks the conclusion of a two-decade political career. His tenure was notably strained due to friction with former President Donald Trump. Historically, when Republicans clash with Trump, the former president tends to prevail.

Cassidy did not advance past the Republican primary. Trump-supported Representative Julia Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming are set to compete in a runoff on June 27. The winner is likely to be favored in the heavily Republican state of Louisiana.

This result adds to Trump’s history of displacing Republicans he perceives as disloyal. During Cassidy’s career, he sometimes showed independence from his party on issues like healthcare. His critical misstep in Trump’s eyes occurred in 2021, when he voted to convict Trump for inciting the January 6th insurrection.

Despite winning re-election by a significant margin weeks prior, Cassidy’s conviction vote was surprising. Typically, he was known for moderate expressions rather than actions. This time, his decision broke from his party on a significant vote.

“Our Constitution and our country is more important than any one person,” Cassidy stated post-vote. “I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty.”

Trump has actively campaigned against Republicans who voted against him. Among the seven GOP senators who voted to convict, only two remain in office. The scenario is similar in the House, where most Republicans who voted to impeach Trump have left office.

Cassidy was re-elected to the Senate in 2014, defeating Democrat Mary Landrieu. His political journey began in the Louisiana state Senate and the U.S. House.

Trump’s influence over the GOP base remains strong. Despite Cassidy’s alignment with Trump’s agenda, including voting for tax cuts, his impeachment vote became a point of contention.

While Cassidy supported Trump’s initiatives, he had conflicts with the administration’s healthcare philosophy. As a doctor and vaccine advocate, he expressed concerns about Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vaccine skeptic, but still confirmed him in a significant vote.

Previously, Cassidy had hesitated over repealing the Affordable Care Act, which he discussed on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” Ultimately, he voted with the GOP, though the repeal failed narrowly.

In 2023, after a controversial ICE operation in Minnesota, Cassidy expressed concern but aligned with his party on security votes. His statement followed Trump’s endorsement of Letlow for the Senate race, which she quickly entered.

Now, Letlow proceeds in the primary, while Cassidy concludes his Senate career.
