Second Lady Usha Vance has welcomed her fourth child, as announced by her husband’s office on X. The Vance family shared, “We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and Alec are happy and healthy, and our kids are thrilled to meet their little brother.”

Usha Vance is the first woman since the 1870s to give birth while her husband serves as vice president. The couple has three other young children, ranging from ages 4 to 9. Vice President JD Vance, while promoting his new book earlier this year, mentioned he might not take parental leave following the birth.

The Vances announced Usha’s pregnancy in January, with a due date initially set for late July. In March, the vice president discussed at a White House event in Michigan his persuasion for having another child, recounting: “When we decided to run for vice president, I said, ‘Honey, I really want a fourth kid.’ She replied, ‘Well, you can become vice president or have a fourth baby.’ However, I managed both.”

Usha Vance confirmed in a March interview with NBC News that her husband convinced her to have a fourth child but noted she had “never closed the door on that.” Initially thinking their family was complete after their daughter’s birth, she expressed growing enthusiasm for the possibility of expanding their family, stating, “I realized I’d be happy with three kids or four. So here we are.”

The couple is also considering leasing a house in Middleburg, Virginia. This residence would be separate from the vice president’s Naval Observatory home in Washington, D.C. The Secret Service plans to increase security for the rural property.
