SEC Actions Prevent Former NFL Players’ Addition to LSU Roster

On Thursday, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and its commissioner, Greg Sankey, acted to prevent former NFL players from joining LSU’s roster before the new season. The SEC emphasized the importance of its members adhering to rules barring athletes with professional contracts from returning to college sports.

There was once a straightforward rule. Any athlete who signed with a professional team could not return to the NCAA. LSU, led by head coach Lane Kiffin, seemed to comply before the season opener against Clemson. They chose not to include Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris on their 105-man roster.

“What happened down there has left a stain on this league,” ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum remarked.

He suggested the SEC considered the situation severe enough to potentially expel LSU from the conference with a vote. However, he acknowledged such a step was unlikely.

Finebaum criticized Kiffin’s actions and questioned LSU’s leadership in managing their coach. He praised Sankey’s leadership during the controversy.

“In a week of chaos, there was one hero, Greg Sankey,” Finebaum said.

Sankey’s decision, supported by 15 other presidents, was seen as pivotal in maintaining the SEC’s integrity during a challenging period.

As the season progresses, whether Kiffin and LSU will reconsider adding Wright or Harris remains uncertain.
