A 15-year-old is being held in juvenile detention following a shooting at a Seattle food festival that resulted in three deaths and at least four injuries. The incident occurred during the Bite of Seattle festival and involved a gunfight between a 15-year-old, a deceased 19-year-old man, and potentially another person.
Seattle authorities suspect gang involvement. Mayor Katie Wilson stated that ongoing investigations aim to determine the number of individuals implicated. “At least two people exchanged gunfire outside the Seattle Center Armory. One is in custody, and a second has been identified as the 19-year-old deceased man,” stated Wilson during a news conference.
Police are reviewing video footage and analyzing evidence such as bullet casings to better understand the events. Prosecutors requested the 15-year-old remain in detention, a decision affirmed by King County Superior Court Judge Tanya Thorp. The teen faces suspicions of three counts of first-degree assault and one count of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, marking his first criminal involvement in King County as per Prosecuting Attorney’s Office spokesperson Casey McNerthney.
Gary Gatewood Jr., a youth coordinator in Seattle, acknowledged familiarity with the teenager but withheld further details. Prosecutors anticipate receiving investigative updates to decide on formal charges soon. The deceased, Junior Cee Niko Semo, aged 19, Ashley Whitehead, aged 56, and Carlos Israel Sanchez Villalba, aged 44, died from gunshot wounds, confirmed by the King County medical examiner.
The Seattle Police Department’s assistant chief of investigations, Nicole Powell, suggested gang-related motives, noting that two groups exchanged shots. During the chaotic scene, a police officer witnessed the 15-year-old firing into a crowd, which included a 2-year-old and a person with a bicycle, before his prompt arrest. The 19-year-old, seized simultaneously, succumbed to gunshot wounds.
Witnesses initially mistook gunfire for firecrackers. Videos on social media showcase people fleeing, with some taking cover beneath vendor tents. Food vendor Hana Kim, present at the festival, described the panic and her efforts to ensure her family’s safety.
Amid the turmoil, Kim shared that strangers sought refuge at her tent. Following the incident, she contacted her family to ensure safety, and with her brother’s assistance, aided their evacuation. A woman later expressed gratitude for Kim’s shelter, which touched Kim deeply, although she admitted she was still coming to terms with the experience.
