A recreational boat, named the Volare, sank in the San Francisco Bay on Tuesday, resulting in the death of at least one person. The incident occurred when a wave hit the boat, causing it to roll onto its side, officials reported on Wednesday.

The boat had 20 individuals on board during the mishap. Among them, 16 people were rescued successfully on Tuesday, while three remain missing. Clifford Joseph Boisa, 79, from Sutter County, California, was rescued but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries upon reaching the shore.

The group on the boat consisted of close friends and family members. They had come together to scatter the ashes of a deceased loved one in the bay.

“The Volare lost its stability after being struck by a wave,” said Captain Jarod Toczko of the U.S. Coast Guard.

This was revealed during a news conference on Wednesday. Captain Toczko explained that as the boat rolled to its right, several individuals fell overboard, while others became disoriented due to the tilting. As the boat began to list further, water started seeping in.

By the time rescue teams arrived around 3:30 p.m., the lower two decks of the boat were already underwater.
