Royal Caribbean recently canceled a scheduled stop for its Icon of the Seas at Costa Maya, Mexico on September 26. The cancellation was due to a maintenance issue that kept the ship in Miami overnight, causing disappointment for some passengers while others celebrated the itinerary change.
Originally, the ship was to leave Miami on Saturday, September 26, but the departure was delayed until Sunday. Royal Caribbean informed passengers through a notice shared on Reddit, indicating that instead of visiting Costa Maya, passengers would have a relaxing day at sea.
Passengers were offered compensation of at least $300 in onboard credit, with amounts varying by cabin type, according to reports. Surprisingly, many passengers on Reddit welcomed the change. One user stated, “$350 to miss the worst port of the itinerary made my day!” Another commented, “Three hundred dollar credit, and you don’t have to go to Costa Maya? That’s a gigantic win.”
The cancellation led to discussions among travelers about the value of visiting Costa Maya. Some described the port as underdeveloped, with little to do, while others criticized it for being run-down. Complaints included an unpleasant smell and seaweed issues, with one traveler noting, “It’s so [run-down], half empty, and smells.” Another stated, “Nothing much to do really right around the port area.”
Despite these views, other passengers were upset by missing excursions to Chacchoben, a Maya archaeological site near Costa Maya. “My daughter is a bit bummed, as our ruins excursion there was what she was looking forward to the most,” one passenger shared. Another commented, “I’m bummed to be missing our Chacchoben ruins tour, but we’ll live.”
