Rethinking Laundry with Patric Richardson

Patric Richardson offers a fresh perspective on laundry practices. As the host of ‘The Laundry Guy’ on Discovery+ and HGTV, and author of ‘House Love: A Joyful Guide to Cleaning, Organizing and Loving the Home You’re In,’ he shares useful insights to extend the life of your clothes and simplify your laundry routine.

Revisiting Laundry Traditions

Richardson encourages discarding outdated laundry rules. Modern appliances are more efficient, and today’s clothing dyes are less likely to bleed. This evolution means some old methods, like washing dark garments in cold water, may no longer be necessary.

With experience in fashion, Richardson emphasizes that home care is suitable for all clothing, regardless of price.

1. Opt for Warm Water

Richardson suggests using warm water for laundry. It quickly activates detergents, enabling faster cleaning. Modern dyes are stable enough to minimize fading and bleeding issues, making warm water a reliable option. For extra caution with new clothes, he advises adding a color catcher to the load.

2. Use the Express Cycle

Embrace the express cycle if available on your washing machine. It uses warm water for 15 to 30 minutes, which is effective for most clothing. Shorter cycles reduce fabric abrasion, extending garment durability.

3. Simplify Detergent Use

Select detergents with recognizable, natural ingredients for easier breakdown in the environment. Use minimal detergent, as excess can remain in the fabric, causing unpleasant texture. Two tablespoons is sufficient for large loads.

4. Manage ‘Dry Clean Only’ Items

Richardson advises using mesh bags for delicate and ‘dry clean only’ garments, protecting them in the wash. Proper care prevents abrasion and maintains garment integrity.

5. Dry with Care

Air drying is ideal for wool, silk, and athleisure wear to avoid damage. Use the dryer minimally to save energy and reduce wear on clothes. Hang clothing in a shower or tub to air dry and prevent dripping mess.

6. Simple Stain and Odor Solutions

Pre-treat stains with a vinegar-water mix and use horsehair brushes for gentle scrubbing. Vodka can neutralize odors on clothing, making it a theater pro’s trick for extending wear between washes.
