Sliman Mansour, a renowned Palestinian artist, has passed away at 79. A pivotal figure in Palestinian art, his works highlighted the life and history of Palestinians through evocative paintings. For over five decades, his art struck a balance between personal narratives and political expression.
Initially, Mansour’s art focused on themes of Palestinian life and history. However, following his incarceration, his creations adopted a noticeably political tone. This shift was reflected in his paintings that were not only visually striking but also conveyed deeper meanings about the Palestinian experience.
His art reached far and wide, with prints and posters distributed in refugee camps and homes throughout the region. One of his notable works, ‘On the Wing of an Angel,’ is part of the permanent collection at the Palestinian Museum in Birzeit.
Mansour’s legacy is twofold. His works preserved Palestinian culture and history, serving as a form of cultural resistance. By capturing the struggles and aspirations of the Palestinian people, he created art that resonated deeply and enduringly.
