Record Number of Native American Candidates in Elections

This year marks a notable increase in political participation among Native American and Indigenous communities, with at least 355 candidates running in local, state, and federal elections. This unprecedented involvement highlights a growing trend in representation for these groups.

Former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland is attempting to make history in New Mexico’s gubernatorial race. If successful, she would become the first Native American woman to hold the position of governor. Her candidacy represents a significant milestone in the fight for diverse representation in political offices.

Similarly, other Native American women are aiming for impactful positions. Former Congresswoman Mary Peltola is campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat in Alaska, while Minnesota’s Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan is pursuing similar ambitions. Their success would break barriers, as a Native American woman has yet to serve in the Senate. These candidacies highlight crucial steps towards achieving equitable representation in governance.
