Rapper Rick Ross, legally known as William Leonard Roberts, was taken into custody by Miami Beach police early Thursday. He faces charges related to domestic violence, including felony battery by strangulation, as confirmed by jail and court records in Miami-Dade.
The 50-year-old artist was booked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center shortly after 6 a.m. this Thursday. He is charged with one count of felony battery by strangulation and a misdemeanor count of battery, both associated with domestic violence.
Ross’ attorney, Bradley Horenstein, contested the charges, asking the public to reserve judgment while the case progresses. “The allegations are false. He’s innocent,” Horenstein stated. “We ask that you let the legal process unfold because the truth will be revealed.”
During a Thursday morning Zoom appearance in Miami-Dade bond court, Judge Mindy Glazer noted probable cause in the case after reviewing the arrest report. The incident was reportedly delayed, occurring on August 28.
Judge Glazer set Ross’ bond at $4,000 for the battery by strangulation charge and $1,000 for the misdemeanor battery charge, totaling $5,000. An order was issued for Ross to refrain from contacting the alleged victim, identified by initials, and to avoid her home, workplace, or school.
The rapper must surrender any firearms and is prohibited from possessing weapons. He must not engage in criminal activities or use illegal substances as the case proceeds. Ross’ arraignment is set for October 22.
Days prior, Ross’ former girlfriend, Jazzma Kendrick, accused him of physical abuse on social media, claiming he injured her lip a month earlier. Ross has not responded publicly to these allegations.
Known for hits like “Hustlin’,” Ross has been a significant figure in hip-hop for two decades.
