Quarantine Decision Overruled for Cruise Ship Passenger

A passenger from a cruise ship, exposed to hantavirus in early May, is being held at a quarantine facility in Nebraska against her wishes. Despite others returning home under monitoring, Angela Perryman, 47, remains in quarantine following a decision by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. This decision goes against a medical review by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

As of June 15, Perryman has tested negative for hantavirus and shown no symptoms. In an interview, she expressed her anger and frustration upon learning of Kennedy’s order. The order was delivered discreetly under the door of her room.

Dr. Michael Bell, the CDC’s quarantine medical reviewer, recommended during a Thursday hearing that Perryman be allowed to return home. Bell suggested remote symptom monitoring once a day, with access to 24-hour assistance if symptoms arise. He stated, “In my professional judgment, this less restrictive alternative is adequate to protect public health.”
