William Lawrence, a co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, defeated two establishment-supported candidates in Michigan’s primary election. He overcame former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink and former Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam to secure the Democratic nomination for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, centered in Lansing.

Lawrence will now compete against Rep. Tom Barrett, R-Mich., in the upcoming November elections. Barrett, a military veteran, seeks a second term in Congress. He previously ran unopposed in the Republican primary after winning the seat in an open race in 2024. This district was formerly held by Democrat Elissa Slotkin, who vacated it to run successfully for Senate.

This victory marks a significant advancement in the internal conflict within the Democratic Party, characterized by efforts to redefine its direction. Mike Marinella, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), commented on Lawrence’s win, suggesting it reflects the broader challenges the Democratic Party faces in securing a majority in the House. He noted that each defeat of establishment candidates potentially strengthens progressive candidates and complicates the party’s electoral strategy.

Lawrence’s support network includes notable figures such as Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. Both have aligned themselves with progressive policies and the Democratic Socialists of America. Although the DSA did not officially endorse a candidate in this race, Lawrence’s policies resonate with their vision.

The Sunrise Movement, which Lawrence helped establish in 2017, began as a climate-focused initiative advocating for the Green New Deal. It has since expanded its objectives to encompass broader social changes, including calls to redefine law enforcement and immigration policies.

For Republicans, Lawrence’s win might be seen as an advantage in their quest to maintain control of the House. They face considerable challenges nationwide, and the outcome of this election will be closely watched.
