On America’s 250th birthday, political figures took the opportunity to voice their visions and criticisms. President Trump used the occasion to criticize the Democratic Party, labeling his political rivals as ‘evil.’ His remarks drew strong responses from those positioning themselves for the 2028 presidential race.

Gov. Gavin Newsom of California, a potential contender, voiced his strong opposition. He stated, ‘This is one man trying to do to our American self-government what no king and no foreign power has ever managed to do.’ Newsom’s speech targeted the president’s falsehoods around the 2020 election and his influence on election rules leading up to the midterms.

Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland, another Democratic hopeful, spoke about the attack on patriotism. Without mentioning Mr. Trump by name, he suggested that patriotic values were at risk under the current leadership.

Both Democrats used the national holiday as a platform. They tied their political visions to traditional ideas of patriotism. However, July 4 became another point of division in America’s political landscape.

Historians noted that although politicians have long used Independence Day for political messaging, Mr. Trump’s openly partisan approach was distinctive.

Adding to the tensions, several Democratic-led states declined to participate in the Trump-endorsed Great American State Fair at the National Mall. This decision highlighted the ongoing divisions across the country.
