A police officer shot a man fatally during a confrontation after a report of someone checking car doors in Madison, Wisconsin, on Wednesday afternoon. This incident led to significant public attention and concern.

Initial Incident and Response

Police received a call about a suspicious individual in the Marquette neighborhood around 1 p.m. The person was allegedly checking parked cars, prompting a police response. The individual fled on a bicycle but encountered officers again at 1:35 p.m., according to Madison Police Chief John Patterson.

Confrontation and Use of Force

During the attempt to detain the man, a struggle ensued in the intersection. As the officers engaged him, the man reportedly pulled out a fixed-blade knife. This led to one officer being injured. Despite using a stun gun, it failed to subdue him. The injured officer then fired his weapon.

A news release from the police department included a photograph of the knife found at the scene. Eyewitness videos, including one confirmed by NBC News, show officers holding the man as shouts of “He’s got a knife!” can be heard. The footage captures an officer yelling “Taser!” and later an officer firing three shots when the man was on the ground.

Officer and Victim Information

The victim, identified as a man in his 30s, was not named at the news conference. Chief Patterson expressed his condolences to the man’s family. The officer who fired the shots is a veteran, although his identity remains undisclosed.

Investigation and Community Response

There were no body cameras on the officers involved. Chief Patterson indicated some videos are being reviewed but cautioned that multiple perspectives exist, highlighting the complexity of the situation.

Four officers at the scene were placed on administrative leave, a routine procedure in such situations. Madison Council Alder Davy Mayer emphasized community safety and transparency regarding the incident’s details.

Michael Doubek, who filmed one of the videos, recounted witnessing the struggle and subsequent shooting. Afterward, police moved a knife away from the individual.

The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra canceled an outdoor performance scheduled for the same evening as protests took place in response to the shooting. The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation will independently investigate, and the district attorney will review the case.
