A significant gathering of masked members from the white nationalist group, Patriot Front, marched through Washington D.C. on Saturday. This event contrasted sharply with the large crowds assembled to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary.
Social media posts displayed videos and photos of numerous men marching in formation near Union Station and various city locations. These individuals wore navy-blue shirts, khaki trousers, tan baseball caps, sunglasses, and white cloth face coverings. They carried American, Confederate flags, and various banners.
The march occurred alongside extensive Independence Day festivities celebrating America’s semiquincentennial. This drew hundreds of thousands of visitors to Washington for military parades, concerts, and a record-setting fireworks display on the National Mall.
In a statement to Newsweek, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) confirmed “tracking First Amendment activities” that took place that morning in the Eastern Market neighborhood.
The department highlighted the right to peacefully express views while committing to public safety and security for residents and visitors. No arrests were reported, according to MPD.
Understanding Patriot Front
Civil rights organizations and extremism researchers classify Patriot Front as a white supremacist and neo-fascist group. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) states the organization supports the belief that America belongs exclusively to European settlers’ descendants.
The group is notorious for highly choreographed, often unannounced, flash demonstrations. According to its website, Patriot Front advocates nonviolent disobedience, presenting their patriotic politics in public spaces to counteract anti-national messaging.
As per the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), Patriot Front emerged in late 2017 following a split from another neo-fascist entity, Vanguard America. This separation happened after the fatal “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, resulting in a counterprotester’s death. SPLC tracks Patriot Front as a highly active white nationalist group, significantly driven by its propaganda campaigns and flash marches.
According to internal documents obtained by USA Today, Patriot Front had over 540 members across all states except Hawaii as of early 2026. The Texas-based group’s records showed half of its members joined in the past two years and had close connections with dozens of Active Clubs, decentralized white supremacist networks blending mixed martial arts with American propaganda. Patriot Front’s founder, Thomas Ryan Rousseau, encouraged members to maintain fitness and continue distributing white supremacist propaganda. As the group aimed to recruit 600 members by July 4 to coincide with the nation’s significant milestone, Rousseau described dedicated work as crucial to their cause.
Attempts to reach Patriot Front or Rousseau for comments were unsuccessful at Newsweek.
Recurring History in Washington
This recent march aligns with a recurring trend of group demonstrations in Washington, D.C., and its surroundings. Patriot Front members have appeared near significant events in the capital, such as the annual March for Life. In May 2023, about 150 members marched in downtown Washington with shields, flags, and banners. Earlier this year, several members held a spontaneous march in Virginia Beach, eliciting strong disapproval from local officials and residents.
On Saturday, the group continued their march under the watchful eyes of local law enforcement, later dispersing as holiday crowds filled the downtown area.
