The Carolina Panthers defense has taken a significant hit with the loss of linebacker Nic Scourton. Scourton, a promising player from last season, suffered an ACL injury on Thursday during the first day of training camp.

Scourton, 21, was a former second-round pick who impressed in his rookie year. He recorded 47 tackles, 37 pressures, 26 hurries, five sacks, and a forced fumble, according to Pro Football Focus. His injury has prompted inquiries into the training practices of the Panthers.

The NFL Players Association has launched an investigation, as multiple reports suggest concerns about the protocol of Thursday’s practice. According to Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers are cooperating with the NFLPA regarding the circumstances that led to Scourton’s injury.

A team spokesperson confirmed the Panthers’ awareness of the NFLPA inquiry related to Thursday’s practice.

Joe Person from The Athletic added that the NFLPA would review the practice footage to ensure compliance with guidelines prohibiting live contact during the initial five-day acclimation period.

The collective bargaining agreement specifies no live contact during the first five days of training camp. Only running and conditioning activities are allowed. If the Panthers violated these rules, they might face penalties from the league.

Possible repercussions include fines for coaches or the team, loss of future organized team activity days, and forfeiture of draft picks.
