U.S.-Iran Tensions Impacting Oil Prices
The recent end to the U.S.-Iran ceasefire has led to a notable increase in oil prices, with growing uncertainty regarding future energy costs.
On Tuesday, the United States announced strikes on Iran as a response to attacks on three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The following day, President Trump declared the ceasefire had concluded, stating that negotiating with Iran was futile. Later that day, the U.S. indicated plans for additional strikes against Iran.
These developments have caused the price of crude oil to rise sharply compared to earlier in the week. The U.S. benchmark, West Texas Intermediate (WTI), is now trading at approximately $75 per barrel, while Brent Crude, the international benchmark, is at $79. Both figures are significant increases from Monday’s $69 and $72 prices, respectively.
Despite these gains, prices remain below the peak seen during the height of the conflict when they reached up to $120 per barrel. Traders are awaiting further developments following the ceasefire’s end.
Robert Weiner, an international business professor at George Washington University, commented that the market perceives a slightly increased risk of export issues but suggested this could change with new information. Ken Medlock from Rice University’s Baker Institute noted that prices may rise gradually over coming days, largely dependent on whether shipments can pass through the key Strait of Hormuz.
