The New York Knicks’ OG Anunoby emerged as a hero for the city after his decisive shot secured an unlikely victory in a game where his team overcame a 29-point deficit.
Anunoby’s game-winning moment occurred during Game 4 of the NBA Finals. With 1.2 seconds remaining, Jalen Brunson’s jump shot failed to hit its mark, allowing Anunoby to leap in and tip the ball for the victory. This iconic play is now etched in Knicks’ history, showcasing Anunoby’s significant contribution despite receiving less attention compared to other stars like Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Following the game, Anunoby and fellow Knicks appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” There, Fallon inquired about Anunoby’s thoughts during the pivotal play. Anunoby attributed the moment to their team’s dedication to securing rebounds, especially crucial ones, as part of their regular training efforts.
“They tell us to crash,” Anunoby shared, adding, “I think we’re all trying to get a rebound if it missed and I was able to get it.” He admitted he also wished Brunson’s late three-pointer succeeded.
Teammate Mikal Bridges reflected on Anunoby’s athletic feat, stating, “I saw a man flying. I couldn’t believe he had the athleticism to tip the ball in and have control of the ball. It was crazy, a crazy play.”
Anunoby’s crucial play was part of a larger victory. Jalen Brunson contributed significantly with 36 points, while Anunoby was the second top scorer with 33 points, alongside securing four rebounds. His last rebound proved decisive in their win.
This victory propelled the Knicks to carry their momentum into Game 5, where they triumphed over the Spurs, 94-90, securing the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
The NBA Playoffs spotlighted players often regarded as unsung heroes. Although there was chatter about Anunoby earning the Finals MVP title, it ultimately went to Brunson. Nevertheless, Anunoby rose as a prominent figure throughout the Knicks’ championship pursuit, poised for continued success in his career.
