Two police officers who defended the Capitol against a pro-Trump mob on January 6, 2021, have initiated legal action against the Trump administration. Their lawsuit aims to halt the creation of a $1.8 billion fund, which they allege is intended to reward rioters and right-wing militia groups.
Former Officer Harry Dunn of the U.S. Capitol Police and Officer Daniel Hodges of Washington’s Metropolitan Police are behind the lawsuit, filed on Wednesday. The legal action accuses the Trump administration of establishing a fund to support insurrectionists and paramilitary groups acting on behalf of former President Trump. Named in the lawsuit are President Trump, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
The officers argue that the administration overstepped its legal bounds by creating the fund without Congressional approval. While Trump administration officials argue the fund is designed to compensate those allegedly unfairly targeted by the Biden Justice Department and Democrats, it has faced criticism, including from within the Republican Party. Opponents view the fund as a vehicle to channel taxpayer money to Trump’s allies.
The lawsuit claims that the fund will, among other things, be used to pay the nearly 1,600 individuals charged in the Capitol attack. Although details about the fund’s purpose are shrouded in secrecy, reports suggest it will financially support the attackers of January 6, 2021.
The White House has directed any queries regarding the lawsuit to the Justice Department, which has yet to respond.
